Sonic was my first video game. I may respect Mario and his games for what they did for the industry, but Sonic and his games were what got me started, end all.
Thus, no matter how bad the reviews or public opinion, I always give his games at least a try. This one's a gamefly rental and I'm not sure if it's convincing me towards a purchase all that well.
Well on the one hand it's a very good looking game. After the 'realistic drab brown' of most games the brightness of this one is a nice breath of fresh air. And really the game was going splendidly at the beginning...
Then the movie ended and the gameplay set in.
On the control side of things, Sonic's smooth and easy to navigate about. Tails is just as easy, although his only form of attacking pretty much means he has to stop in his tracks, not so good for a game that's supposed to be based of speed.
But really, my only major gruff with the game are it's load screens. Especially for 'optional' helper missions. The NPC tells you their issue, you get a loading screen, then you get a small five second scene of them repeating the mission, and then another loading screen.
And the loading screens seem to hang on the screen for quite a long time. It's teeth grindingly annoying. There are hundreds of games that manage to do what this game does and MORE and don't have to resort to loading screens. It makes me wonder what the programmers were doing.
There's not shining positive's or wow-moments to really mention here either. Except maybe 'wow, were Sonic and Tails always that.. slow in the mind.' But I stopped worrying about logic and characterization from Sonic Team many games ago. They'd really have to pull off something mindblowingly bad get me to post it here. Till then I consider it a lost battle and just give up.
At least the games somewhat fun to pick up and play, even with the annoying interruptions to the play by the loading screens. So I'm not going to entirely condemn it just yet.
